FFMI Calculator
Fat free mass index — how much muscle you carry for your height, and where that sits against what is achievable without drugs.

FFMI is fat free mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The normalised version adjusts to a 1.8m reference height so tall and short lifters can be compared fairly. The widely cited natural ceiling of about 25 comes from a 1995 study of pre-steroid-era bodybuilders; a handful of outliers exceed it, so treat it as a strong guideline rather than a law. Your result is only as good as your body fat number. General fitness information, not medical advice.
What FFMI measures that BMI cannot
BMI calls every heavily muscled lifter obese, because it only knows height and weight. FFMI fixes that by throwing the fat away first and asking a better question: how much muscle are you carrying for your frame? It is the number bodybuilders, strength coaches and researchers use when they want to talk about size honestly.
How it is calculated
Fat free mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. The normalised version adds a correction to a 1.8 metre reference height, so a 5-foot-6 lifter and a 6-foot-4 lifter can be compared on the same scale. Without that correction, shorter lifters score artificially high — which is exactly why normalised FFMI is the figure worth quoting.
The number everyone argues about
A normalised FFMI of about 25 is widely treated as the natural ceiling for men. That figure comes from a 1995 study comparing pre-steroid-era bodybuilders with modern users, and the pre-era group clustered just under 25 while the users ran well above it. It is a strong guideline rather than a hard law — genuine genetic outliers exist — but if someone is sitting at 27 with visible abs and claiming it came from oats and hard work, the arithmetic is doing the talking.
What a realistic target looks like
Most men who have never trained seriously sit between 18 and 20. A few years of consistent heavy lifting and proper eating moves that to 21 or 22, and that is already a physique people notice in a t-shirt. Twenty three to 25 represents a decade or more of work plus favourable genetics. For women the equivalent bands run roughly three points lower.
Why it moves so slowly
FFMI measures lean tissue, and lean tissue is built in grams per week, not pounds. Going from 20 to 22 means adding roughly fifteen pounds of actual muscle, which for a trained lifter is several years of work. That is not discouraging — it is the correct timescale, and knowing it stops you quitting a programme at week six because the mirror looks the same.
Common questions
How accurate is it? Entirely dependent on your body fat number. A tape measurement is good enough for tracking; use the same method every time.
Is a higher FFMI always better? No. Carrying more muscle has real costs in recovery, food and joints. Chase what you can maintain.
Why is mine lower than I expected? Usually an overestimated body fat percentage, or a frame that carries size well. Track the trend, not the single reading.
